Weather & Best Time to Visit in Reykjavik

Best time to visit Reykjavik

Reykjavik has two distinct travel windows. Summer (June–August) brings near-24-hour daylight with the midnight sun peaking around June 21, temperatures in the mid-50s°F, and full access to the Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon, glacier hikes, and whale watching — it is the most comfortable season for first-time visitors. For the Northern Lights (aurora borealis), September and October are the sweet spot: nights are dark enough for aurora viewing, the autumn equinox boosts geomagnetic activity, temperatures remain more bearable than January–March, and skies can be clearer than midwinter. Serious aurora chasers extend their window through March. Iceland Airwaves (November) and the New Year's Eve fireworks (one of the world's most dramatic) draw visitors in the shoulder and winter months.
